Training Information
All firefighters are required to receive the nationwide certification of FIREFIGHTER II to be an active member. Most of our firefighters now hold the OFFICER I certification, with a handfull being first responders, and three being certified instructors. We meet once a month for regulart training sessions, not to mention the county and statewide trainings attended on weekends and evenings. Our members strive to bring excellence to our community.
Walkerton firefighters, along with neighboring firefighters from Polk Twp., Koontz Lake,
and Pleasant Twp. participated in a self contained breathing apparatus endurance training.
The training offered firefighters a test that forced them to conserve breathing air, while
completing the course. It was focused on the firefighters personal limits.
Walkerton, Polk , Lincoln EMS crews were at the exercise and recorded vitals of each
firefighter that competed, before and after the course. Firefighters had to drag 100 foot
of charged hoseline, crawl through a confined space tunnel , and squeeze through a 16 inch
stud wall opening, among many other stations. All stations were made to simullate the work
performed at a working building fire.
The Walkerton Fire Department plans to have this endurance course in their training
schedule twice per year. This will keep our firefighters in better physical condition for
the future.
